Calf Pens and Hutches

The use of Mistral will keep calf pens and hutches dry and therefore limit the growth of pathogenic bacteria, molds and other fungi.  A clean and healthy environment is essential for a strong immune system.  When the calf’s immunity is high, more energy can be used for growth rather than for fighting disease.  In addition, chronic conditions related to a depressed immune system will be less likely to develop and the calf will have a better chance to reach it’s full genetic potential.

Ammonia burns the lining of the lungs and trachea allowing bacteria to enter the respiratory tract.  In addition, ammonia destroys the ciliated cells of the respiratory tract, thus slowing mucus movement.  When mucus slows, bacteria pools in this stationary mucus and infections can occur. 

Ammonia can also kill the white blood cells on the lungs called macrophages.  These macrophages attack and destroy bacteria, further reducing the calf’s defense against foreign invaders.  Ammonia is another chronic stressor that can influence the growth rates and infectious disease levels in young animals.

Pneumonia is the second leading cause of pre-weaned heifer deaths behind scours, but the two diseases go hand in hand.  Pneumonia and scours are both caused by bacteria and viruses.  However, dampness and ammonia gas can significantly affect the level of disease.

Unlike other products, Mistral will limit the ammonia gas that can be produced as well as adsorb what is present in the environment.  Mistral offers superior protection from the harmful effects of ammonia gas to animals and caretakers alike. 

Mistral is a natural fly repellant due to one of the dry oils used in the product.  Reduced insect levels will lead to improved comfort for young stock and a reduction in the spread of disease.  In addition, fewer insects will reduce skin and wound irritation and will improve sanitation.

The immune systems of dairy calves and young stock are constantly fighting off pathogens. A compromised immune system is directly responsible for decreased growth rates and feed efficiency.
